A Book Review: The Night House by Jo Nesbø
Some books stay with you long after you’ve finished them — and The Night House is absolutely one of those.
From the very first chapter, I was pulled into Richard’s unsettling world. After losing his parents in a fire, Richard moves in with his aunt and uncle in a small town. But his arrival doesn’t go smoothly. He’s the outsider, and when two classmates disappear under eerie circumstances — with Richard as the last person to see them alive — suspicion falls squarely on him.
But here’s the twist: The Night House doesn’t just play out as a simple missing persons thriller. Jo Nesbø crafts a story where reality bends, horror elements creep in, and the line between truth and imagination is constantly blurred. Phones seem to swallow people whole, shadows move where they shouldn’t, and the forest surrounding the town feels alive with secrets.
It’s a book that mixes psychological suspense with supernatural dread, keeping you unsettled and flipping pages. Just when you think you’ve figured out what’s going on, the narrative shifts, pulling you deeper into the mystery of what’s real — and what isn’t.
I was gobsmacked by how brilliant the literary layout was. The story felt layered, disorienting in the best way, and completely addictive. This was only the second book in my life that I’ve finished in under 24 hours — that’s how impossible it was to put down.
Why You’ll Love The Night House
A main character you’re not sure you can trust.
Unsettling horror elements woven into a thriller framework.
Small-town secrets, eerie forests, and a creeping sense of dread.
A twisty structure that challenges your perception of reality.
This is more than just a thriller — it’s a psychological puzzle that plays with the reader as much as the characters.
