Overview

Following the global success of The Silent Patient, Alex Michaelides returned with The Maidens, a dark academia thriller set at Cambridge University. The story centers on Mariana, a group therapist investigating the mysterious death of her niece’s friend, and her suspicion of a charismatic professor tied to a secret society of female students called “The Maidens.”

What Works

The setting is rich with atmosphere — Cambridge’s gothic architecture and the infusion of Greek tragedy give the novel a unique aesthetic. Michaelides is clearly inspired by classic literature, and that adds depth for readers who enjoy mythological references.

Where It Falls Short

Unfortunately, the execution doesn’t quite match the promise. The pacing lags in the middle, the supporting characters are underdeveloped, and the final reveal feels less earned than in The Silent Patient. At times, it leans too heavily on tropes instead of building organic suspense.

Verdict

This is a 3-star read for me. It’s atmospheric and intriguing but ultimately underwhelming, especially compared to other dark academia thrillers.

Best for: fans of gothic settings, Greek mythology, and campus mysteries who don’t mind a slower pace.
